713 Anganwadi centres lack proper building in Gujarat, admits state

The dire condition of Anganwadi centre (child care center) in Gujarat’s tribal regions has come to light, with 713 centres in Narmada and Chhotaudepur districts operating without proper buildings.

This issue was raised in the state assembly by AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava, who questioned the Women and Child Development Minister regarding the status of Anganwadi infrastructure. 

In response, State Education Minister Praful Panseriya provided district-wise data, revealing the number of affected Anganwadi centres –

Narmada District: Dediapada (71), Garudeshwar (55), Nandod (74), Sagbara (83), Tilakwada (51).

Chhotaudepur District: Bodeli (62), Chhota Udepur (67), Kawant (73), Nasvadi (75), Pavi Jetpur (68), Sankheda (34).

The lack of infrastructure has forced many Anganwadi centre to operate out of rented buildings or alternative locations:

In Narmada district, 182 centres function in rented spaces, while 152 operate in other makeshift arrangements.

In Chhotaudepur district, 68 centres run in rented buildings, while 311 operate in donor-provided or government-owned premises.

The state government has initiated new construction projects to address this issue:

Narmada:

197 centres are currently under construction.

37 are in the tendering phase.

90 await Gram Panchayat-level approvals.

10 are undergoing land acquisition for permanent buildings.

Chhotaudepur:

98 centres are in the tendering stage.

100 are under construction.

34 are awaiting technical approvals.

147 have received preliminary approval.
