17.35 lakh men and 1.85 lakh women addicted to drugs in Gujarat
64,561 kgs of drugs, 986 litres of intoxicating liquid, and 72978 drug pills-injections seized in last 4 years from Gujarat
Updated: Jun 27th, 2023
As the world marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse on June 26, the reports in the 'dry state' of India are discouraging to say the least. If the reports are to be believed, Gujarat is slowly emerging as the drug-epicentre in recent times.
Let’s talk about numbers..
As per a report by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, 64,561 kg of drugs, 986 litres of intoxicating liquid, and 72,978 drug pills and injections have been seized in Gujarat in the last four years. These are the numbers of only seized drugs; the amount of drugs sold might be beyond the estimation.
Central agencies, including the state police, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), are patrolling the border areas of the state, sea routes, and ports around the clock to stop the drug trafficking.
Why are authorities failing to eradicate drugs?
The reason might be that there is not enough police staff. There are only 117 policemen per 100,000 people in the state. Gujarat has fewer police personnel than the national average. Interestingly, the government has stopped the grants to voluntary organisations working to eradicate drug pollution.
