Seven richest Indians lose 34 billion dollars in stock market washout of 2025

Seven Indian billionaires have lost a staggering $34 billion (~₹2.96 lakh crore) YTD (year-to-date) due to the constant decline in the stock market, as per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Negative global cues, especially Trump’s tariff scares have kept Indian markets in red – since he took charge of the office on January 20, 2025. The Sensex, which stood at 79,943.71 on January 2, 2025, stands at 74,029.76 on March 12, suggesting a 7.4% decline.

For Nifty, the same decline stands at 7.10% as it started the year at 24,188.65 on January 2, 2025, and stands at 22,470.50 on March 12, 2025.

The most significant dent in the wealth has been borne by Gautam Adani, who has lost the most among the Indian billionaires. From the beginning of the year till date (March 12, 2025), Adani has lost $10.1 billion (~₹88,100 crore) of his wealth, according to Bloomberg.

Following Adani are Shiv Nadar at a loss of $7.13 billion, Shapoorji Pallonji Group’s Shapoor Mistry at $4.52 billion, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries’ Dilip Shanghvi at $4.21 billion, and Reliance Group’s Mukesh Ambani – India’s richest as of March 12, 2025 – has incurred a loss of $3.13 billion to his wealth.

On the contrary, ArcelorMittal’s Lakshmi Mittal added $3.13 billion to his wealth, and Bharti Enterprises’ Sunil Mittal added $917 million to his wealth.
