Ahmedabad’s roads became death traps for people, as the city’s public transport buses have turned fatal for 13 of them. The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) buses have caused a number of accidents in the last few months, alleged a Congress leader.
259 bus accidents in the city in five months
As per the data presented on Sept 4 by Shehzad Khan Pathan, leader of the opposition in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Congress corporator from Danilimda constituency, the city’s AMTS-BRTS buses have allegedly caused 259 accidents this year just during April to Aug.
The AMTS ‘red buses’ have caused 102 accidents in the last five months, due to which nine fatalities have been reported, according to Pathan.
BRTS buses, which have their own lanes, have also registered 157 accidents during the same period. In four of these cases, fatalities were reported.
Congress alleges deliberate inaction from AMC
The opposition has pointed fingers at AMC, saying that the latter is not taking any action against the private operators of the city’s many public transport buses.
The bus drivers have even been accused of talking on the phone while driving, and there are allegations of some of them also being in an inebriated state.
Bicycle riders, motorcyclists, pedestrians, handcart pullers, and even a bus passenger in an isolated case, have lost their lives in the accidents involving these buses.
