Torrent Pharma Data Theft Case: Court Rejects Bail Plea Of Odisha Man Accused Of Demanding ₹16 Crore Ransom

The Ahmedabad Sessions Court has rejected the bail plea of Odisha-based accused K Lokanath Subodh in a case involving the alleged theft of confidential data belonging to Torrent Pharma and demands for crores of rupees in ransom.

Accused Allegedly Stole Confidential Company Data

Torrent Pharma had lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Branch, alleging that the accused gained unauthorised access to the company's computer system and stole emails, business documents, customer information, discount structures and other confidential data.

According to the allegations, the accused threatened to sell the stolen information to competitors and allegedly demanded ₹10 crore from the company, sending documents through speed post. He later allegedly raised the demand to ₹6 crore.

Devices And Documents Seized

Police allegedly seized a Redmi 5G mobile phone, an Intel CPU, a spiral bullet and around 51 documents allegedly linked to the case from the accused.

Court Cites Serious Allegations

While rejecting the bail plea, the court observed that the accused faced serious allegations involving the theft of confidential data and demands for crores of rupees in ransom.

The court also noted the rising incidence of cybercrime and observed that the chargesheet in the case was yet to be filed.

Considering the seriousness of the allegations and the stage of the investigation, the court rejected the accused's bail application.
