A temporary panic broke out in parts of Ahmedabad on Thursday after tear gas vapours released during a police drill at the Shahibaug Police Headquarters spread beyond the campus and reached the nearby Riverfront Road, causing eye irritation among motorists and pedestrians.

According to initial information, the tear gas was released as part of an exercise inside the Police Headquarters premises. However, the vapours drifted outside the campus due to wind, affecting commuters travelling along the Riverfront Road.

Several motorists and pedestrians reported burning eyes, excessive tearing and discomfort, with some stopping to wash their eyes. A few drivers also slowed down or briefly halted their vehicles as reduced visibility and irritation caused concern.

The incident triggered brief confusion among commuters before police personnel brought the situation under control.

Traffic briefly affected

Police officials responded immediately after receiving information about the spread of the vapours and took necessary measures to minimise inconvenience to the public.
