The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Thursday launched a large-scale demolition drive in Motera as part of a road widening project linked to infrastructure development for the proposed Commonwealth Games and future Olympic-related projects.

The operation was carried out along the stretch between Sabarmati Janpath three-way junction and D-Mart in Motera, where portions of commercial properties falling within the approved road alignment were demolished.

According to civic officials, more than 50 commercial property owners were served notices before the demolition drive began.

Road closed, traffic diverted

The AMC's West Zone Estate Department deployed excavators (JCBs), heavy machinery and civic staff for the operation. A police team was also stationed at the site to maintain law and order and manage traffic.

To facilitate the demolition, authorities temporarily closed the road from Motera D-Mart to Sabarmati Janpath, leading to traffic diversions in the area.

Only commercial properties targeted

AMC officials clarified that the demolition drive is currently limited to commercial structures falling within the approved road line. Residential properties are not being affected at this stage.

The road widening exercise is part of Ahmedabad's broader infrastructure expansion plan aimed at improving connectivity and preparing key urban corridors for proposed international sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games and Olympic-related infrastructure development.

Officials said similar demolition drives will be carried out in phases based on the approved road alignment and project implementation schedule.
