Girder launching has begun at the under-construction Vadaj Junction flyover in Ahmedabad, marking a key milestone in a project that has been delayed by nearly eight months beyond its original completion deadline.
The flyover, one of the city's major infrastructure projects, has long caused traffic congestion for commuters in the western part of Ahmedabad. With the onset of the monsoon, authorities have stepped up construction to avoid further disruption.
As part of the ongoing work, girders are being launched for the 41-metre span between Pier G-1 and G-3 on the stretch connecting Vadaj Junction to Gandhi Ashram. The operation, which began on Friday night, is expected to be completed by the night of July 5.
Officials said completion of this phase will significantly advance the project, with the entire flyover now targeted for completion by November 2026.
One side of road to remain closed at night
To minimise inconvenience to commuters, the girder launching work will be carried out only during night hours.
- Only one side of the road will remain closed during the night-time operation.
- Traffic will continue as usual during the day to reduce inconvenience for office-goers and motorists.
Contractor fined over ₹90 lakh for delay
The flyover was originally scheduled to be completed by April 30, 2026, but persistent delays have pushed the revised deadline to November 2026.
The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has imposed a penalty of more than ₹90 lakh on the contractor for the delay.
Officials attributed the slow progress to the heavy round-the-clock traffic movement through the Vadaj Junction corridor, which made construction challenging.
Once completed, the flyover is expected to ease congestion for around 1.5 lakh vehicles, 100 GSRTC buses, and 50 AMTS buses that use the route every day.
