Ahmedabad Rural Police have stepped up checking across the district following deaths in the Bhavnagar spurious liquor case, amid suspicion that the suspected liquor consignment may have passed through rural Ahmedabad before reaching Bhavnagar.
The police have launched combing operations on vulnerable routes and are working with village-level representatives to trace the possible movement, storage and sale of the suspected liquor.
800 police personnel deployed
Ahmedabad Rural SP Om Prakash Jat said around 800 police personnel were deployed for checking operations carried out from late Tuesday night until 8 am on Wednesday.
The drive resulted in 177 cases related to liquor offences being registered, police said.
Authorities now plan to expand the operation to around 500 villages across Ahmedabad district. Police teams will visit villages, interact with residents and local representatives and gather information about illegal liquor activities and the suspected consignment.
Sarpanches asked to remain alert
Police have held meetings with sarpanches across Ahmedabad Rural and asked them to immediately report any information about the movement or storage of illegal liquor.
SP Jat said, “We have carried out checking at various locations across the district from the night until 8 am. Discussions with sarpanches of villages in Ahmedabad Rural are continuing. Anyone having information regarding the movement or storage of the liquor should inform the police.”
Police issue warning over ‘Royal Stag’
Amid the investigation into the Bhavnagar deaths, Ahmedabad Rural Police have specifically appealed to residents not to consume liquor being sold under the brand name ‘Royal Stag’.
People who have purchased or consumed such liquor have been urged to immediately inform the police. Authorities have also advised residents to stay away from liquor of uncertain origin and report any suspicious stock.
The intensified checking is part of the investigation into the suspected route taken by the liquor before it reached Bhavnagar. Police are focusing on identifying its source, transportation route and possible storage points in Ahmedabad district.
