The Ramol Police in Ahmedabad have arrested two persons and seized 7,800 demonetised ₹500 currency notes with a face value of ₹39 lakh, along with two mobile phones, during a patrol operation in the Ramol area.
According to police, the operation was carried out on June 25 after officers received a tip-off about individuals carrying demonetised currency. A surveillance team intercepted the suspects near Rabari Colony crossroads in Ramol and recovered the banned ₹500 notes from their possession.
The arrested accused have been identified as Bharatsinh Pragjibhai Mahida (40), currently residing in Ambernath East, Mumbai, and originally from Jamnagar, and Merajuddin Jamil Khan (56), a resident of Surat.
Police said the accused were carrying 7,800 demonetised ₹500 notes, having a total face value of ₹39 lakh, along with two mobile phones worth around ₹20,000. All the seized items have been taken into police custody.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly revealed that the demonetised notes had been obtained from a wanted accused, Ayanuddin Gyasuddin Patve of Jalgaon, Maharashtra, and were being transported to another wanted accused, Shailesh Patel of Gandhinagar, for illegal exchange.
Based on the preliminary investigation, Ramol Police have registered a case under the Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liabilities) Act, 2017, which prohibits the unauthorised possession, transfer and exchange of demonetised currency notes after the 2016 demonetisation.
Police said efforts are underway to trace and arrest the two wanted accused allegedly linked to the racket. Further investigation is in progress to identify the source of the demonetised currency and ascertain whether more people were involved in the illegal operation.
