Meta Removes Controversial AI Image Tool After User Backlash Over Privacy Concerns

Meta has withdrawn its AI image-generation feature ‘Muse Image’ from Instagram following widespread criticism from users and privacy concerns over the use of personal photographs without explicit permission.

The social media company reportedly removed the feature after users raised concerns that the tool could allow people to generate AI images using photos from public Instagram accounts without the consent of the individuals featured.

The feature, which was recently introduced across Instagram Stories, WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, allowed users to create AI-generated images by tagging a public account and using photographs associated with that account.

Users raise data security concerns

The rollout triggered criticism from users and cybersecurity experts, who questioned how personal images were being accessed and used for artificial intelligence-generated content.

Many users described the feature as a potential privacy risk, warning that publicly available photographs could be misused to create inappropriate or misleading content.

Initially, Meta had restricted the feature from being used with private accounts and accounts belonging to users under the age of 18. However, growing criticism over data protection concerns led to the feature being removed.
