An Indian software developer working overseas has sparked widespread discussion online after sharing an example of a supportive workplace interaction with his American manager.

In a Reddit post, the employee explained that his family circumstances had recently changed following the birth of his child. His wife was returning to work, and the couple had hired a nanny for their seven-month-old baby, who would leave by late afternoon.

With no extended family support available abroad, the developer said he would need to take care of the child from 4:30 pm until his wife returned home in the evening.

Rather than managing the situation informally, he chose to inform his manager in advance, outlining his revised schedule and proposing adjustments to his working hours. In his message, he assured that he would compensate for the time by starting earlier or working later in the day.

The response from his manager, which the developer described as “understanding and encouraging”, drew attention online. She reportedly welcomed the update, expressed goodwill towards his family situation and suggested marking the time as out-of-office in his calendar to avoid scheduling conflicts.

The employee said the exchange reflected a positive and empathetic work environment, adding that such trust motivated him to perform better and maintain productivity.

He contrasted the experience with workplace expectations in India, suggesting that flexibility and autonomy were often more limited. His remarks prompted mixed reactions online, with some users echoing his views while others highlighted the need for balanced perspectives.

Several commenters praised both the manager’s response and the employee’s transparent communication, noting that such interactions demonstrate how a supportive work culture can be shaped by everyday decisions rather than formal policies.
