A man convicted of killing two people, including an Indian, in the US state of Oklahoma in 2002 was executed on Apr 4.

The convict, Michael Dwayne Smith, was put to death by lethal injection at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.

Smith had shot and killed Indian store clerk Sharath Pulluru and another individual, Janet Moore, in separate incidents on Feb 22, 2002.

“The families of Janet Moore and Sharath Pulluru have waited 22 long years for justice,” Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond said in a statement after Smith’s execution.

“They have suffered through unimaginable pain and grief. Both victims were murdered simply because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. I am grateful that justice has finally been served,” they added.

Last month, Sharath’s brother, Harish Pulluru, issued a statement urging that Smith not be granted clemency.
