Indian-origin student arrested, banned for on-campus pro-Palestine protest

Indian-origin student Achinthya Shivalingam was arrested and banned from New Jersey’s Princeton University in the US for an alleged involvement in the encampment of pro-Palestine protesters on campus grounds.

Another fifth-year PhD student at Princeton, Hassan Sayed, has also been arrested over encampment in McCosh Courtyard.

According to Princeton Alumni Weekly (PAW), the university’s magazine, “Protesters set up tents for a student-led pro-Palestine encampment in McCosh Courtyard at about 7 a.m. on Apr 25.”

“After warnings from university officials, two Princeton students were arrested, and the remaining protesters packed away their camping gear and continued the demonstration as a sit-in,” stated the magazine.

About 110 people were present in the courtyard around 9 a.m. on the same day and were engaged in painting pro-Palestine banners. The gathering swelled to around 300 by noon, comprising Princeton students, faculty, community members, and visitors, amidst white tents prepared for upcoming events, according to PAW.

Achinthya Shivalingam was born in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and was raised in Columbus, Ohio. She is pursuing a Master in Public Affairs (MPA) in International Development from the Role School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.
