Indian origin killed in US as he resembled murderers uncle

A 30-year-old Indian-origin man, Akshay Gupta, was stabbed to death by a fellow Indian in a public bus in the Austin area, Texas, US, the police said.

Gupta was a budding entrepreneur and had co-founded ‘ASG Research LLC’ in June 2024. He was travelling via a CapMetro bus on the evening of May 14.

Austin Police Department (APD) officers said that the suspect, later identified as Deepak Kandel, had been sitting next to Gupta on the bus when, without provocation, Kandel stabbed Gupta in the neck.

Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. Once the bus was stopped, Kandel calmly exited the bus with the other passengers and left the scene on foot. 

“APD patrol officers were able to locate and detain Kandel a short time later. Kandel admitted to stabbing Mr. Gupta due to him resembling his uncle. Kandel was booked into the Travis County Jail and has been charged with first degree murder,” said officers.

A total of 13 Indians (primarily students) died in the United States between January and April 2024. Most of the victims were aged below 30, according to reports.
