H-1B visa 2026: Record 2.86 lakh applications, over 2 lakh pay $1,00,000 for fast processing
The United States has received a record 2.86 lakh applications for H-1B visas for the fiscal year 2026, according to details shared during a recent US Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing.
Out of the total applicants, more than 2 lakh people reportedly selected a fast-track processing option by paying an additional $100,000 fee. Under this system, applications are processed within 15 days, while normal applications may take up to 7.5 months.
The information was shared by Senator Markwayne Mullin during the hearing. He said the high number of applications reflects strong global demand for skilled jobs in the United States, especially in sectors like technology and healthcare.
The H-1B visa is a popular work visa that allows foreign professionals to work in specialised fields in the US. Each year, it attracts hundreds of thousands of applicants from around the world, especially from countries like India and China.
Specialists say the sharp rise in applications shows the continuing importance of the H-1B visa system for the US economy, but also raises questions about fairness, accessibility, and workforce distribution across urban and rural areas.
The debate over visa costs, processing speed, and workforce shortages is expected to continue as the US reviews its immigration and labor policies for the coming years.
