Gujarat Police Recover ₹11 Lakh for Sydney-based NRI in Amreli Cyber Fraud Case

The Gujarat Police's Amreli Cyber Crime Team has recovered ₹11 lakh for a Sydney-based Indian-origin man who was allegedly duped in a gold purchase fraud, earning appreciation from the victim for its swift investigation and continuous support despite him being overseas.

The victim, Saurabh Jolly, an Indian resident living in Sydney, Australia, wrote to the Superintendent of Police, Amreli, thanking the police for their professionalism and prompt action that led to the recovery of the entire amount.

Money recovered after email complaint

According to Amreli Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kharat, Jolly, originally from New Delhi, transferred ₹11 lakh in April 2026 to a person in Amreli to purchase gold. However, the promised gold was never delivered.

Unable to travel to India, Jolly lodged a complaint via email in June 2026. Police immediately initiated an investigation and assured him that the matter would be pursued despite his being abroad.

"As soon as we received his complaint via email, we promptly launched an investigation and assured him of our full support. Our Cyber Crime Team coordinated with the concerned bank, pursued the matter continuously, and kept the complainant informed throughout the investigation," SP Sanjay Kharat said.

Police Inspector Kamlesh Khatana of the Amreli Cyber Crime Police said the team traced the recipient of the money and persuaded him to return the amount.

"Saurabh Jolly transferred the amount for the purchase of gold in April 2026, but the seller failed to deliver the gold. In June, Jolly approached the Amreli Police via email because the recipient of the money was a resident of Amreli. We pursued the matter and asked the recipient to return the money. He eventually refunded the entire amount in July," Khatana said.

The recovered ₹11 lakh was subsequently credited back to Jolly's bank account.

Victim praises Gujarat Police

In his letter, Jolly said he never felt disconnected from the investigation despite being thousands of kilometres away. He praised the officers for maintaining regular communication, patiently addressing his concerns and handling the case efficiently.

He described the Amreli Cyber Crime Team's efforts as an example of how prompt police action can help restore public confidence in tackling cyber fraud and said the experience strengthened his trust in the professionalism of the Gujarat Police.

The development comes as Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi has directed Gujarat Police to provide immediate assistance to cyber fraud victims and make every possible effort to recover their hard-earned money.
