In a rare and unprecedented case, a Gujarat man convicted of the murder of his fiancée in the United Kingdom has been extradited to India to serve the remainder of his life sentence.
A 24-year-old Indian-origin man, Jigu Sorthi, originally from Surat, was living in the UK in 2020 when he stabbed his fiancée, Bhavini Pravin, four times at her home in Leicester, resulting in her death.
After serving four years in a British prison, Sorthi asked for a transfer to Surat’s prison to serve the rest of the sentence.
The Leicester court accepted the transfer and Sorthi was escorted to Delhi airport where a special team of Gujarat Police received him and safely transported him to Lajpore Jail.
The couple planned to live together in 2017, however, Bhavini’s parents were against her relationship with Jigu and were trying to convince her not to pursue it.
Gradually, Bhavini’s behaviour changed, leading to a rift in their relationship and, Bhavini calling off the wedding when they were in the UK.
Amidst this ongoing tension, Jigu murdered Bhavini at her home. In this case, Leicestershire Police noted that two hours later, he contacted an officer outside a nearby police station and claimed that he was being framed for the murder.
Jigu denied committing the murder, but the court found him guilty. The court noted that it was a horrific, cruel, and merciless murder. “You have taken the life of a beautiful, talented young woman, for what?” the judge said. “You have disgraced yourself rather than seeking revenge.”
