Canadian musician Grimes has taken to social media to address the rising wave of anti-India sentiment, especially in the wake of recent political developments in the United States. The musician, who was previously in a relationship with Elon Musk, expressed her disappointment with the online rhetoric and emphasised her personal connection to Indian culture.

In her post on X (formerly twitter), Grimes – whose real name is Claire Boucher – criticised the sudden surge in anti-Indian sentiments, calling it ‘embarrassing’ and pointed out that the situation was not as spontaneous as it seemed. She stated, “Suddenly concocting anti-Indian energy out of nowhere is embarrassing y’all. Also, they were clear they planned to do this.”

Grimes shared that her stepfather, Ravi Sidhoo, is Indian and that she was raised in a “half-Indian household”. Reflecting on her upbringing, she described her childhood as vibrant and culturally rich. “Indian culture jives very well with Western culture,” she remarked in her post, underscoring the harmonious blending of traditions in her household.

The backlash against the Indian community began following the appointment of Sriram Krishnan to a role in Donald Trump’s administration. In the midst of growing racist and bigoted commentary, Grimes condemned the hateful rhetoric targeting Indians, reminding people of the shared history and cultural exchanges between the US and India.

Born in Vancouver, Grimes explained that after her parents’ divorce, her mother remarried Sidhoo, who is a businessman and director of East India Carpets in Vancouver. Grimes’ personal connection to the Indian community seems to have deeply influenced her stance on cultural exchange and the importance of countering bigotry.
