10 Indians per hour try to enter US illegally, around half of them Gujaratis
Updated: Oct 26th, 2024
From October 2023 to September 2024, 29 lakh illegal entrants – including 90,000 Indians, were caught trying to enter the USA illegally through the Mexico and Canada borders.
Thus, on average, at least 10 Indians are caught every day attempting to enter the US illegally, according to US Customs and Border Protection (US-CBP).
According to reports, about 50% of these immigrants are from Gujarat.
Additionally, there has been a shift, with people now choosing the Canada route to enter the US rather than the previously popular Mexico route.
As per media reports, this change is due to two main reasons: first, individuals are often held in Dubai or Turkey before being transmitted to Mexico; and second, scrutiny on the Mexico route has increased due to its notoriety as a well-known entry point into the US.
Many Gujaratis have opted for the northern route through Canada, as it is perceived to be less risky.
However, US officials have stepped up security measures and tightened controls at the borders.
