Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday reached a Delhi police station along with a student who allegedly suffered a pellet injury during a July 20 protest march to Parliament, seeking registration of a complaint against police personnel accused of using pellet guns during the demonstration.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday demanded an FIR over the July 20 pellet firing, claiming the victim was hit by more than 200 pellets, including three in his eyes, and has lost his eyesight.
Gandhi first went to Mandir Marg police station with student Sahil Lochav, who was part of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led march demanding the resignation of former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The two later went to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Delhi, at Parliament Street.
Complaint Allegedly Pending Since August 14
According to a Congress leader accompanying Gandhi, Lochav had submitted a written complaint to Delhi Police on August 14 but was allegedly not provided details of the investigating officer.
The Congress leader said Lochav followed up on the complaint through email and telephone on August 17 but still did not receive details of the officer handling the case.
“No acknowledgement was also given,” the leader claimed.
The Congress leader said Gandhi accompanied Lochav to assist him in pursuing the complaint and would remain at the police office until the case was registered.
Congress Alleges Police Failed To Register FIR
The Congress leader alleged that the complaint concerns a cognisable offence and therefore an FIR should have been registered.
“As it’s a cognisable offence, an FIR also has to be registered, but Delhi Police is not doing so,” the leader said.
The complaint relates to allegations that police personnel fired pellet guns during the July 20 protest march to Parliament. Lochav is among those who allegedly suffered injuries during the demonstration.
