Over 2 Lakh Indians Gave Up Citizenship Last Year

Updated: Aug 2nd, 2024

A growing number of Indians are choosing to renounce their citizenship, with 2.1 lakh people giving up their Indian passports in 2023 alone. This alarming trend has seen a steady rise in recent years, with nearly 7.5 lakh people abandoning their Indian citizenship in the past four years.

The government revealed these figures in response to a question raised in the Rajya Sabha. The data shows a consistent upward trajectory, with more than 2 lakh people giving up their Indian citizenship in both 2022 and 2023.

Opposition MP (Member of Parliament) Raghav Chadha expressed concern over this exodus and demanded answers from the government. He questioned the reasons behind this trend and sought to understand why Indian citizenship is becoming less appealing to its citizens.

Chadha also raised the issue of "brain drain," where highly skilled Indians are leaving the country in search of better opportunities
