India’s Mumbai is among the costliest cities in the world and topped other Indian cities on the list. As per Mercer’s rankings for the World’s costliest cities, Mumbai ranked 136 out of 226.

Other Indian cities on the list were New Delhi (165), Chennai (189), Bengaluru (195), Hyderabad (202), Pune (205), and Kolkata (207).

On the global scale, the list was topped by Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich (Switzerland) on ranks one, two, and three, respectively.

The other cities among the top 10 costliest cities involved Geneva, Basel, and Bern in Switzerland, New York City in the US, London in the UK, Nassau in the Bahamas and Los Angeles in the US.

Many European cities dominate the list of the world’s most expensive places. Alongside four Swiss cities, London was in the 8th position. Other towns in the region include Copenhagen in Denmark (11), Vienna in Austria (24), Paris in France (29), and Amsterdam in Netherlands (30).

What are the key factors of the costliest cities?

According to the report, fluctuations in exchange rates and inflation impact globally mobile employees' income and savings, altering purchasing power. Economic and geopolitical volatility heightens living costs unpredictably, especially in cities like Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich with expensive housing and high living expenses.

Conversely, cities like Islamabad, Lagos, and Abuja offer affordability due to currency depreciation, stated the report.
