India condemns attacks on vessels in Strait of Hormuz

India on Tuesday strongly condemned the attacks on two commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, describing them as acts of violence against seafarers that threaten the safety of international shipping routes.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the attacks targeted MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, which were carrying a combined crew of 46, including 30 Indian nationals.

According to the MEA, one Indian seafarer was killed and another injured aboard MT Al Bahiyah, which had 12 Indian crew members. On MT Mombasa, carrying 18 Indian nationals, nine Indians were injured, including two who sustained serious injuries.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased Indian national and wish speedy recovery to those injured. Our Mission and Post in the UAE are closely monitoring the situation and are in touch with the UAE authorities to ensure all possible assistance to the affected Indian seafarers," the ministry said.

India Summons Iranian

The MEA said the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi was summoned on Tuesday, during which India lodged a strong protest over the attacks.

"The Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi was summoned this morning by the Ministry of External Affairs and a strong protest against these attacks was lodged with him."

India also expressed concern over the renewed escalation of hostilities in West Asia and called for an immediate end to the violence.

"We reiterate our deep concern on account of the resumption of attacks and escalation of hostilities in the West Asian region and call for immediate cessation of violence and a return to dialogue and diplomacy in the interests of peace, security and stability in the region," the statement added.

Call to protect global shipping

The MEA stressed that commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted and urged all parties to ensure the restoration of free and uninterrupted navigation through international waterways in accordance with international law.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's busiest maritime trade corridors, handling a significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Any disruption in the strategic waterway has the potential to affect global energy markets and international trade.
