Canadian man removed from India for alleged conversion activities in Assam
A Canadian citizen, who had been visiting Assam’s Jorhat district since 2021, was deported after being found involved in proselytising (religious conversion) activities. Authorities issued a ‘Leave India Notice’ following an adverse report. The individual was handed over to the FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) in Kolkata and deported from New Delhi.
Brandon Joel Dewalt, a Canadian national, was deported after being found engaging in religious conversion activities in Jorhat despite his tourist visa expiring on January 7, according to police reports. Authorities stated that Dewalt was involved in proselytization efforts, including running the Grace Church at Mission Campus and advocating Christianity during gatherings, which was a violation of visa regulations.
Upon investigation, the case was forwarded to the FRRO in Kolkata, who issued a deportation order. Dewalt was escorted by a Jorhat police officer to Kolkata airport, after which he was transferred to Delhi for his return flight to Canada.
