Bengal BJP worker murder: Main accused arrested, 40 still absconding

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Howrah District Police have arrested Sheikh Saifuddin, the main accused in the murder of BJP worker Prashant Dey from Bagnan in Howrah district. The arrest was made on Sunday, making him the 11th person to be held in connection with the case.

CID continues crackdown, 40 accused still absconding

The CID took over the investigation on June 21. A total of 51 people were named in the FIR, and with Saifuddin’s arrest, 40 accused are still absconding. The accused will be produced before a district court in Howrah, where the prosecution is expected to seek his custody for further investigation.

CM assures family of justice

On Saturday evening, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the residence of Prashant Dey in Bagnan and met his family members. Along with announcing financial assistance, he assured them that everyone involved in the murder would be arrested and brought to justice.

Police directed to speed up investigation

After meeting the family, the Chief Minister visited Bagnan police station and reviewed the progress of the investigation with police and CID officials. He directed officers to intensify efforts to arrest the remaining accused and said that no one involved in the case would be spared.

The Chief Minister said several people were attacked with deadly weapons on June 17, leaving many injured. While some victims are still undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kolkata, Prashant Dey succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts. He added that he had been closely monitoring the case from the very beginning.

The Howrah District Magistrate’s Office has already provided ₹4 lakh in compensation to the victim’s family. The Chief Minister also announced an additional ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Fund and a contract-based job for Prashant Dey’s elder daughter at the BDO office.
