Mumbai on RedAlert: Schools Closed on Monday Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Red Alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy rainfall and strong winds. Keeping students’ safety in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all government and private schools and colleges in Mumbai on Monday, July 6, 2026.

However, all government and private offices will remain open as usual. Meanwhile, Mumbai University has postponed all examinations scheduled for today in view of the heavy rainfall alert.

Apart from Mumbai, Thane District Collector Shrikrishnanath Panchal has also announced the closure of all anganwadis, primary and secondary schools across the district. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has likewise decided to keep all schools closed on Monday. Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil and Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde have urged citizens to avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary.

The Navi Mumbai administration has warned residents that incidents of trees falling have increased due to strong winds. Citizens have been advised not to stand under trees or park vehicles beneath them. The civic body has also ordered the immediate evacuation of buildings declared unsafe to prevent any untoward incidents.

Mumbai records heavy rainfall in 24 hours

Mumbai and its surrounding areas witnessed incessant rainfall throughout Sunday. According to the BMC, in the 24 hours ending at 6 pm on July 5, Mumbai city recorded 265 mm of rainfall, while the suburbs received over 227 mm. Meanwhile, Gaganbawda recorded the highest rainfall at 143.1 mm.

Traffic affected, railway services remain normal

Heavy rainfall has disrupted vehicular movement on seven roads, including two state highways, and the administration is closely monitoring the situation. However, Mumbai's suburban railway network—often referred to as the city's lifeline and traffic on the national highways continue to operate normally without any major disruptions.
