Man stabbed to death in Mumbai local train after argument over closing door

A 22-year-old man was reportedly stabbed to death inside the first-class compartment of a Mumbai local train after an argument over closing the train door during heavy rain. Police arrested the accused, 30-year-old Roshan Suvarna, from Panvel on Wednesday, as per reports.

The victim, Mayank Lohar, reportedly lived in Virar and worked at a clothing showroom in Andheri East. He was on his way home after work when the incident happened.

According to reports citing police, Mayank boarded the Churchgate-Nalasopara fast local train from Andheri at around 10.43 pm. Suvarna, who worked at a cargo facility near Andheri, had allegedly consumed almost a bottle of rum before boarding the train. He had planned to take a cab home but  reportedly switched to the train because of heavy rain and the lack of available cabs.

Police reportedly said that Suvarna was standing near the train door when Mayank and a few other passengers asked him to close it, as rainwater was entering the compartment. This reportedly led to an argument. Suvarna later claimed that Mayank hit him on the forehead and that a few other passengers also assaulted him. Police are checking these claims with witnesses.

Even after other passengers separated them, Suvarna allegedly took out a knife from his bag and  stabbed Mayank several times in the chest and abdomen. Police said he then threatened other passengers with the knife before jumping off the train at Borivali station and escaping, as per reports.

Videos recorded by passengers captured the panic inside the coach after the attack. Mayank was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
