Visitor visa holders in Canada won’t be able to apply for work permit from within country
In a major policy reversal, Canada has ended a longstanding provision that permitted visitors to apply for work permits while staying in the country. Effective immediately, this change means that foreign nationals on visitor visas must now return to their home countries to apply for work permits.
Previously, the policy allowed individuals to transition from visitor status to a work permit without leaving Canada, providing a convenient option for those who found employment opportunities during their stay. However, the Canadian government has decided to discontinue this practice as part of a broader strategy to streamline its immigration system and address concerns about potential misuse.
The policy shift will affect many current visitor visa holders who had planned to apply for work permits under the old rules. These individuals will now face the challenge of leaving Canada and applying for permits from abroad, potentially leading to delays and complications in securing employment in the country.
The move could impact industries that rely heavily on international workers, exacerbating existing labor shortages.
In response to the new regulations, the Canadian government has advised affected visitors to initiate their work permit applications from their home countries. Officials have promised to support and guide applicants through this transition, aiming to mitigate the impact of the policy change.
This development reflects Canada’s ongoing adjustments to its immigration policies, as the country adapts to shifting priorities and operational needs within its immigration system.
Earlier, protests erupted in Canada after Canadian PM Justin Trudeau decided to reduce permanent residency and the number of low-wage temporary foreign workers in Canada.
