Canada’s plan to cut down low-wage workers will hit Indians the hardest

97.6% of Canada’s population growth came from “international migration” last year

Problems may pile up for Indians aspiring to move to Canada as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has planned to lower the number of low-wage temporary foreign workers.

As the election approaches in Canada, Trudeau is making several decisions, one of which will have a significant impact on Indians. This will affect millions of foreigners working at low  wages and on temporary jobs in the country, most of which comprise a large number of Indian students.

Indian students work in small jobs alongside their studies in Canada. Election experts suggest that Trudeau’s decision could lead to increased unemployment among visitors and youth.

Trudeau took to X, stating, “The labour market has changed. We are going to reduce the number of low-wage temporary foreign workers in Canada. It’s time to invest in Canadian workers and youth.”

However, Trudeau is facing criticism for this decision. A large number of users are demanding his resignation, and many Canadians are calling him the worst PM they have had.

According to news reports, following the Covid-19 pandemic, there was significant relief provided due to a severe shortage of workers. This resulted in a notable increase in the number of low-wage temporary workers.

In 2023, the vast majority (97.6%) of Canada’s population growth came from “international migration” (both permanent and temporary immigration) and the remaining portion (2.4%) came from natural increase, according to figures of StanCan.

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) in Canada is a government initiative that allows Canadian employers to hire foreign nationals for temporary positions when qualified Canadians or permanent residents are unavailable. This program aims to address labour shortages in certain sectors or regions.

In a press conference, Trudeau reportedly said that it is not fair to Canadians struggling to find a good job, and it’s not fair to those temporary foreign workers, some of whom are being mistreated and exploited.

Canada is now discussing changes to its immigration system. With a reduction in the number of permanent residents, there may be discussions on this topic at cabinet retreat this week.
