Woman robbed of ₹20,000 in front of Ahmedabad police commisoner's house

A 45-year-old woman was allegedly robbed of ₹20,000 by two unidentified men on a scooter near Ahmedabad Police Commissioner's house in the Shahibaug area of the city, police said on Wednesday.

According to Shahibaug police, the incident took place on May 9 when the woman was travelling in an auto-rickshaw to distribute wedding invitations for her son’s marriage.

Police identified the complainant as Bharatiben Patni, a resident of Meghaninagar, who runs a street food business along with her husband. In her complaint, Bharatiben stated that her son Sahil was going to getting married and she had stepped out with her brother to distribute 'kankotri' (wedding invitation cards) to relatives across the city.

She told the police that she was carrying ₹20,000 meant for payments related to clothes and wedding catering orders. The cash had been placed in a small bag tied around her waist while she travelled in a rickshaw.

The incident occurred around 2.45 pm when Bharatiben and her brother were passing near the FSL crossroads from Holi Chakla towards Parameshwar Park behind the Civil Hospital. Two unidentified men, aged between 20 and 25 years, allegedly arrived on an Activa scooter from behind the rickshaw.

Police said the pillion rider suddenly snatched the bag containing the cash from around the woman’s waist before the duo sped away towards Civil hospital area.

The complainant and her brother attempted to chase the suspects in the rickshaw, but the accused managed to flee. Bharatiben told the police that neither she nor her brother could note down the registration number of the scooter as the accused escaped at high speed.

The woman later approached the police after remaining occupied with post-wedding engagements and lodged a complaint seeking legal action against the unidentified accused.

The Shahibaug police have registered a case of theft and launched an investigation into the incident. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is also being examined to trace the suspects.
