The Bharatiya Janata Party has swept all 15 municipal corporations in Gujarat, registering a clean sweep and leaving the opposition with little presence across civic bodies.

Both the Indian National Congress and Aam Aadmi Party suffered major setbacks, with several corporations left without a strong opposition.

Elections were held for 15 municipal corporations. Polling took place on April 26. Find out results for Gujarat municipality polls here.

Among the urban bodies, the 15 municipal corporations witnessed a turnout of 49%.

According to the State Election Commission, a total of 732 candidates were elected unopposed ahead of the polls. This includes 43 candidates in municipal corporations.

Key results:

  • Morbi: BJP won all 52 seats
  • Porbandar: BJP won all 52 seats
  • Navsari: BJP won 50 out of 52 seats
  • Surendranagar: BJP won 51 out of 52 seats
  • Nadiad: BJP won all 51 seats
  • Rajkot: BJP secured 65 out of 72 seats

The results underline BJP’s dominant hold over urban local bodies in the state, with opposition parties struggling to make an impact.

No opposition in Surat Municipal Corporation

Surat Municipal Corporation will remain without an opposition, marking the first such instance since 1995. Out of 120 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party has secured 115, while the Aam Aadmi Party has won 4 seats and the Indian National Congress just 1.

As per rules, a minimum of seven seats is required for a party or alliance to be officially recognised as the opposition. However, even combined, the opposition parties fall short of this mark. As a result, the civic body will function without a recognised opposition bench.

This also means there will be no Leader of Opposition in the corporation, and consequently, no official perks such as office space, vehicle or communication facilities allocated for the role.
