Vadodara outer ring road

To address the traffic woes on Vadodara’s roads, a 75-metre outer ring road is set to outline the city.

Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) commissioner Dilip Rana met with union minister Nitin Gadkari to seek monetary assistance for the ring road. However, as it does not fall under the purview of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), no aid could be provided.

The authority will, however, fund the bridges on this road, for which assistance of around ₹300 cr is to be provided.

On approaching the state government for the same, the project is to be allocated benefits under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhya Mantri Shaheri Vikas Yojna (SJMMSVY).

New outer ring road around Vadodara

Traffic woes in Vadodara were previously addressed when Manoj Das, then municipal commissioner, mapped out the inner ring road and outer ring road projects.

The outer ring road aimed to provide fast connections of the Airport Circle area with Genda Circle, Vadsar, Makarpura, Tarsali, Dabhoi Road, Waghodia Road, and Ajwa Road through a 40-metre-wide road.

Meanwhile, the inner ring road is interconnected with Muktanand Three Roads to Sangam Harni Warasiya Char Rasta, further extending to Ajwa Road, Waghodia Road, and finally connecting to Dabhoi Road.

As traffic issues resurfaced, the VMC and Vadodara Urban Development Authority (VUDA) proposed another outer ring road section to resolve this.

The construction of the 75-metre outer ring road will extend from Bhayli to Sindhrot, Ankodiya, Gorwa, Chhani, Harni, Kapurai, Vadadala, Maneja, Maretha, and Samlaya, covering a distance of 25 km.

The road will be connected with five 30-metre and 60-metre-wide link roads, at an estimated expenditure of ₹21 cr.

Bridges to be constructed on the outer ring road:

- Maneja-Maretha rail and river bridges at an estimated cost of ₹150 cr.

- An overbridge over the railway line parallel to the 30-metre ring road leading from Narmada Canal to Gorwa for ₹70 cr.

- Another overbridge over the Vishwamitri River parallel to the 30-metre ring road leading from Narmada Canal to the Vishwamitri River for ₹45 cr.

VMC seeks Centre-State assistance

The need for assistance from both the central and state governments for this project was previously expressed.

Meanwhile, municipal commissioner Rana met with the road transport and highways minister to present a demand of ₹500 cr.

However, NHAI assistance was deemed inapplicable except for railway-river bridge constructions in this meeting, as the ring road is under city jurisdiction. Rana was directed to approach the state government for this.

In a noteworthy turn of events, Rana would be Vadodara’s third municipal commissioner to undertake the outer ring road project, which has been reportedly pending for the last five years.
