Vehicle registration in Gujarat rise 70% in last decade, led by two-wheelers

The number of registered vehicles in Gujarat has increased by nearly 70% over the past decade, reflecting rapid growth in mobility and private vehicle ownership across the state, according to data from the Commissionerate of Transport.
Official figures show that the total number of vehicles rose from 1.67 crore in 2014–15 to 3.11 crore in 2024–25. Of the currently registered vehicles, around 75% are two-wheelers, underlining their dominance in the state’s transport landscape.
As per 2024–25 data, Gujarat has 247 lakh two-wheelers, 49.54 lakh cars, 11 lakh autorickshaws and 1.63 lakh buses. Over a longer period, the growth has been even more pronounced: the state had only 48.10 lakh vehicles in 2000–01, indicating a steep rise in registrations over the past 25 years.
The number of cars has also shown steady expansion. From just 15,927 cars in 1960–61, the figure rose to 1.55 lakh in 1990–91 and 4.38 lakh in 2000–01. Registrations climbed further to 12.18 lakh in 2010–11 and 34.62 lakh in 2019–20. Compared with 2019–20, the number of cars has increased by more than 40%.
Based on an estimated state population of 7.31 crore in 2026, there is now roughly one passenger vehicle for every 2.36 residents in Gujarat.
District-wise data indicates that Ahmedabad leads the state in the number of passenger vehicles, with 61.93 lakh registered vehicles, including 46.01 lakh two-wheelers and about 2.91 lakh autorickshaws and similar categories.
In the transport and agricultural segments, the state also has a substantial number of heavy vehicles, including 12.10 lakh tractors and 4.15 lakh trailers, highlighting the growing mechanisation of the agricultural sector alongside the rise in private vehicle ownership.
