Since formation of Gujarat, seventh time a new district has been formed
After a decade, the westernmost state of India got a new district at the beginning of 2025.
As Vav-Tharad becomes the 34th district of Gujarat, let's have a peek into the past when the state only had 17 districts.
With the formation of Gujarat on May 1, 1960, the state had 17 districts, including Ahmedabad, Amreli, Banaskantha, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, the Dangs, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Kheda, Kachchh, Mehsana, Panchmahal, Rajkot, Sabarkantha, Surat, Surendranagar and Vadodara.
While Kutch was the largest district (area-wise), the Dangs was the smallest.
Over time, the existing districts were divided, and on January 1, 2025, the number of districts has doubled!
Timeline of new districts:
Year | Districts Formed |
---|---|
1964 | Gandhinagar |
1966 | Valsad |
1997 | Anand, Dahod, Narmada, Navsari, Porbandar |
