Vav-Tharad is new district of Gujarat, becomes 34th district in state
Gujarat has embraced a new district – Vav-Tharad – carved out of Banaskantha district. The state will now have 34 districts.
"The new district, Vav-Tharad, will be formed by combining 8 talukas and 4 municipalities, with headquarters in Tharad," said state government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel on Wednesday.
According to Patel, around 600 villages will be part of this new district. The average distance between villages will be 30-40 kilometres. Additional government funding will also be allocated for the new district.
Following a decision taken in the state cabinet meeting, approval was granted for the division of Banaskantha district.
New talukas
Talukas of Vav-Tharad: Vav, Bhabhar, Tharad, Dhanera, Suigam, Lakhani, Diyodar, and Kankrej.
Talukas of Banaskantha: Palanpur, Danta, Amirgarh, Dantiwada, Vadgam, and Deesa.
Earlier, Banaskantha had 14 talukas, of which 7 talukas, including Vav, Suigam, Bhabhar, Kankrej, Deodar, and Lakhani, are expected to be included in the new Tharad district. Tharad will be the headquarters of this new district.
For many years, representations were made to the government to make Tharad a new district in Banaskantha. Following these requests, the chief minister sought an opinion from the district collector through the Tharad deputy collector. The Tharad deputy collector submitted a report to the government, stating that Tharad is geographically and socially suitable to be a district.
A local leader from Tharad mentioned that the formation of the Tharad district would make administrative services easily accessible to people in these five talukas. The region, including Tharad, would witness development, enhanced facilities, and an increase in employment opportunities.
