The government’s scheme to fill vacant teaching positions in schools with assistant teachers has proven to be ineffective. Despite introducing this scheme to fill the shortage of teachers in government and grant-aided schools, thousands of positions remain vacant. To which state has requested for decentralisation of the recruitment.

The government has implemented a scheme to appoint teacher assistants on a contract basis for 11 months to address the shortage of teachers in classes 9 to 12 in government and grant-aided schools. However, the central recruitment process has failed to attract enough candidates.

Out of the 15,356 positions, more than 6,000 remain unfilled. This is primarily because the low salary and the prospect of being posted to remote locations are not attracting potential candidates.

Following this, there is a growing demand for decentralising the recruitment process, allowing district schools to fill the vacant positions. This would enable schools to select candidates based on local needs and preferences.
