Typhoid outbreak worsens in Gandhinagar, patient count crosses 200

A water-borne typhoid outbreak is rapidly spreading across several sectors of Gandhinagar, with the number of affected patients now crossing 200, as per reports.
However, civic body maintains that 144 cases have been officially recorded so far.
The surge in cases has reportedly led to overcrowding at Gandhinagar Civil Hospital as well as multiple private hospitals in the city. Private diagnostic laboratories have also reported a steady rise in typhoid-positive cases, indicating a much graver situation on the ground than what official figures suggest.
Areas worst affected include Sectors 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, and pockets near the GIDC zone. The condition of wards at Gandhinagar Civil Hospital and the rising number of admissions in private hospitals located in the old sectors point towards the alarming scale of the outbreak.
While the municipal corporation has reiterated that 11 new cases were added recently, taking the total to 144, hospital data paints a different picture.
Nearly three paediatric wards, the critical children’s ward, along with male and female medical wards at the civil hospital are witnessing a continuous inflow of typhoid patients. In addition, a significant number of patients with typhoid-like symptoms are reporting to the OPD and emergency departments daily.
Beyond the civil hospital, patients from the affected areas are also being admitted to several private hospitals across both old Gandhinagar and parts of New Gandhinagar.
Laboratory data from across the city further underscores the severity of the outbreak, suggesting that more than 200 individuals have already been affected.
The growing gap between official claims and ground realities has raised serious concerns over water quality, disease surveillance and public health response in the state capital.
