Two years, 2,623 accidents: The worrisome numbers of road accidents in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad has 97 ‘accident zones’, nine of them only on the SG highway
Gujarat ranks 10th in the number of accidents in India
There has been a worrisome rise in accidents in Ahmedabad. It should be noted that 68% of accidents occurred due to reported overspeeding, to which pedestrians and two-wheeler drivers fall prey. An average of 100 accidents are reported in Ahmedabad every month, and more than 30 people lose their lives.
According to a survey by the Ahmedabad traffic police, the city has a total of 97 accident zones, of which nine lie on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar (SG) highway, where the latest accident took place, taking nine lives
Let’s talk about numbers
Ahmedabad reported 1,185 accident cases in 2020, and the number rose to 1,433 in 2021. Unfortunately, these accidents took 744 lives in two years. Among the dead, 25% were pedestrians, and 43% were drivers of two-wheeled vehicles.
The survey by the city traffic police indicates that the majority of accidents take place on the SG highway in Ahmedabad. 15 accidents near Andaaz Party Lawns, 13 on the ISKCON flyover, 10 near the ISKCON crossroads, 9 near the YMCA club, 9 near the Thaltej underpass, 6 near Karnavati club road and a total of 81 accidents were recorded between the YMCA club and Chharodi Patiya in 2022.
Recently, Gujarati film actor Malhar Thakar shared a video on social media appealing to car drivers in Ahmedabad to avoid rash driving. The video was uploaded after the death of Gujarati film assistant director Japan Thakar, who was hit by an overspeeding car while he was driving his two-wheeler.
