Two nabbed over theft of ₹2.87 lakh in Ahmedabad BRTS

The Ahmedabad crime branch arrested two suspects in the case of theft from a widow in the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) between Kalupur and Shivranjani stations last week.

The two accused, named Sonal Parakari Gaikwad alias Chhoti and Rameshwari Gaikwad of the Sardarnagar area, have a number of cases lodged against them in Ahmedabad.

Police recovered $700, cash ₹50,000, a passport, two PAN cards, two Aadhaar cards, and an election card were found and valuables worth ₹1.07 lakhs were seized.

According to reports, the two accused had gathered around the widow in the BRTS bus after seeing her boarding with a large purse. Sonal slit the bottom of the purse with a razor blade, and passed the valuables from it to Rameshwari.

Prior to this, 14 cases have been registered against Sonal since 2011 and four cases against Rameshwari since 2014 in different police stations in Ahmedabad.

Kashmira, a widow, had boarded the BRTS from Kalupur Ghee Bazar to send a parcel to her son who studies in Canada. When she deboarded the bus at Shivranjani Cross Road, she realised a passport, a 20g gold chain, $700 (~₹58,400), and cash of around ₹1,60,000 were stolen, amounting to a total of ₹2.87 lakh.
