Two children born every minute in Gujarat, 11.26 lakh in a year

In Gujarat, 4.88 lakh deaths and 11.26 lakh childbirths were recorded in a single year. On average, two children are born every minute in Gujarat. Ahmedabad district tops the list in both highest number of births and deaths, with 65,416 deaths and 1.24 lakh births in one year.

Gujarat’s gender gaps

The report has been prepared based on registrations of births and deaths recorded under the Civil Registration System for the year 2022. According to the data, in rural areas of Gujarat, 1.59 lakh boys and 1.49 lakh girls were born, totalling 3.68 lakh births, while in urban areas, 4.36 lakh boys and 3.87 lakh girls were born, totalling 8.17 lakh births. 

This shows a significant gender gap, with fewer girls born compared to boys. Additionally, birth rates are higher in urban areas than in rural regions.

District-wise death statistics

Surat ranked second with 98,000 births, Banaskantha third with 76,000, Dahod fourth, and Rajkot fifth. Of the children born in Gujarat, 7,447 boys and 5,118 girls died before reaching the age of one.

In the number of deaths, Ahmedabad topped the list among other districts with 65,410 total deaths, followed by Surat (44,292), Vadodara (31,997), and Rajkot (26,374).

 Age-wise deaths statistics 

The highest number of 1.93 lakh deaths occurred in people aged over 76. In the 55–64 age group, there were 85,155 deaths, while the 45–54 age group saw 66,629 deaths. A total of 19,968 deaths were recorded among children under 14 years of age. Of the total deaths, 2.93 lakh were male and 1.94 lakh were female.
