A 52-year-old casual labourer was allegedly assaulted with baseball bats by two brothers following an argument over the headlights of their scooter in Bapunagar on August 13, police said.

The incident took place around 10.30 pm when the complainant, Satishbhai Shankarbhai Bhatt, was sitting outside a house with his nephew Sanjay and his nephew’s son Sandeep.

The complainant told police that Ashish alias Bhagwat Gulabsingh Chauhan and his brother Sachin Gulabsingh Chauhan, residents of Omnagar in Amraiwadi, arrived on an Activa and stopped nearby with the vehicle’s headlights switched on.

As the bright lights were making it difficult for him to see, Bhatt allegedly asked the brothers to switch them off. He told them that he had undergone cataract surgery in both eyes and was having difficulty seeing.

The request led to an argument between the two sides. The brothers allegedly began abusing and assaulting Bhatt and his relatives.

Victim, Relatives Allegedly Attacked With Bats

When the argument escalated, the accused allegedly took baseball bats from their Activa and struck Bhatt on his left leg below the knee, left arm and around his left ankle.

When Sanjay and Sandeep intervened to protect Bhatt, the accused allegedly assaulted them as well. Their shouts reportedly drew people from the neighbourhood, who intervened and prevented further assault.

While leaving the spot, the two accused allegedly threatened the victims with serious consequences if they approached the police.

Injured Taken To L G Hospital

A passer-by subsequently called an ambulance and Bhatt was taken to L G Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. His nephew Sanjay and Sandeep also received medical treatment and were discharged following outpatient care.

Bhatt told police that he had initially refrained from filing a complaint after discussing the matter with his family. However, after his condition improved, he approached the police and lodged a complaint against the two brothers.

The Bapunagar police have registered a case and begun an investigation. Statements of the injured persons and witnesses are expected to form part of the probe.
