In a violent altercation linked to an extortion demand, a 29-year-old travel operator was attacked and robbed by a group of men near Gita Mandir in Ahmedabad in the early hours of Tuesday. The victim, Soheb Mohmand, sustained knife injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at HCG Hospital.
As per the FIR lodged with Gaekwad Haveli police, Soheb Mohammad, who runs Shyam Travels along with his business partner Kaushikbhai Goswami, was targeted by five individuals allegedly demanding daily payments to allow their luxury travel vehicles to operate in the Gita Mandir area. The accused have been identified as Sharif Khan, Fezan, Manjur, and one unidentified person.
The incident occurred around 12.30 am on April 28, when one of the Shyam Travels' luxury buses had stopped to pick up passengers near Patel Guest House at Gita Mandir. Mohmand, who was following the vehicle on his motorcycle with his partner, was approached by Fezan and Manjur, who allegedly demanded a daily 'allowance' for operating in the area. When he refused, they began assaulting him with wooden sticks.
Moments later, Sharif Khan arrived with a knife and stabbed Mohmand on his left wrist and shoulder. An accomplice struck his leg, causing him to fall, following which the attackers allegedly snatched a 15-gram gold chain worth Rs 3.85 lakh and Rs 9,000 in cash from his trouser pocket.
Bystanders and Mohmand’s business partner intervened and called an ambulance, later took him to HCG Hospital, where he was admitted to the emergency ward.
It is suspected that the attack was a premeditated attempt to extort money in exchange for allowing vehicles to operate freely in the area, the police stated. Right now police have registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS, including robbery and attempted murder, and have launched an investigation. No arrests have been made as yet.
