Subhash Bridge shut for repairs from today, AMC announces major traffic diversions across Ahmedabad

The Subhash Bridge over the Sabarmati River, one of the city’s key connectors between the western and northern parts of Ahmedabad, has been closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic from Thursday for maintenance work, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) announced.
The closure, which comes into effect from December 4, is expected to significantly impact daily commuters travelling between Sabarmati, Chandkheda, Shahibaug and the Civil Hospital corridor. The city traffic police have issued detailed diversion routes to manage congestion and ensure smoother movement along alternate roads.
Three diversion routes announced
According to a press note issued by N N Chaudhary, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), the following diversions are now in place:
1. Traffic from Chandkheda and Sabarmati towards Delhi Darwaza–Shahibaug–Civil Hospital
Vehicles approaching Subhash Bridge from Chandkheda or Sabarmati will not be permitted to enter the bridge. Instead, they may: proceed via Chimanbhai Patel Bridge, continue towards Prabodhaval Circle and Ranip D-Mart, take the newly constructed road, and then travel via Vadaj Circle and Dadhichi Bridge to reach Delhi Darwaza, Shahibaug and Civil Hospital.
2. Vehicles from Sabarmati/Chandkheda heading specifically towards Civil Hospital
Drivers may take the alternative northern corridor: via Bhat–Koteshwar Road, moving through Indira Bridge, and onto Airport Road, to reach the Civil Hospital and Shahibaug areas.
3. Traffic from Shahibaug attempting to access Subhash Bridge
Vehicles will need to navigate via:
- Shahibaug Underbridge Circle or Shahibaug Railway Bridge, proceed towards Namaste Circle, take the Kendriya Vidyalaya Cut ,travel through Devjipura,Meldi Mata Circle, and then move towards Dadhichi Bridge, before heading to Vadaj Circle and onward to Ranip and D-Mart.
Public advised to plan travel and expect delays
With Subhash Bridge acting as a vital link for thousands of daily commuters, its temporary closure is expected to increase traffic pressure on the neighbouring Dadhichi, Chimanbhai Patel and Indira bridges. Traffic officials have advised motorists to plan journeys in advance and follow diversion signages installed across the affected stretches.
The AMC has not yet announced the duration of the maintenance work. The police have urged residents to cooperate with the temporary diversions to avoid congestion and ensure the safety of workers stationed at the bridge.
“All citizens are informed and requested to use the alternative routes provided,” said traffic official.
