Sonography machine at a multispeciality hospital in Ahmedabad’s Bavla was sealed off for carrying tests related to the sex determination of a foetus.

According to the information received, a multispeciality hospital in the Ahmedabad rural, Bavla, was performing prenatal sex determination tests for ₹35,000, telling the expecting parents the gender of the child.

Under Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994 (PC-PNDT) Act, the whole sting operation was organised by chief district health officer Shailesh Parmar and his team.

Acting on the tip-off, the district panchayat’s chief district health officer set up a trap, where Dr Ravi Doshi was caught red-handed.

Out of ₹35,000 asked by Dr Doshi, ₹15,000 of the government money was recovered, whereas his agent, Prakash Valand, is absconding with the remaining ₹20,000.

The PC-PNDT Act prohibits prenatal sex determination procedures, and was passed by the parliament of India to combat female foeticide and address the dwindling sex ratio in the country.
