The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has established a new revenue stream by selling treated water, making it the only municipal corporation in the country to do so.
The SMC has generated revenue of ₹340 cr by selling treated water from three tertiary treatment plants (TTP) over three years.
SMC initiated the provision of water to industries by treating sewage water, which initially faced several challenges.
However, as the SMC treated the wastewater along with conserving drinking water, the project generated significant revenue, and environmental conservation was ensured.
The Surat municipality is providing 115 MLD (million litres per day) of industrial-grade water to industries in Pandesara and Sachin areas by treating sewage water.
Furthermore, SMC has constructed two TTPs with a combined capacity of 75 MLD (40 MLD + 35 MLD) in Bamroli and one 40 MLD TTP in Dindoli.
SMC incurred an expenditure of ₹345 cr to establish these three networks, which has been brought to break even in three years.
SMC has made the TTPs a successful revenue source and is now organising plans to provide secondary treated water to industries in Palsana to further expand their arms.
