Gujarat sees an alarming 23% dropout rate in grades 9-10

According to the dropout statistics in the academic year of 2022-23 23% of students in classes 9 and 10 dropped out from the schools in Gujarat. Over 1.15 lakh students in the state are not attending the school.

The state government’s education department conducts an annual child tracking and dropout survey, every year to keep track of the education of students in the state.

The data obtained by the government by the survey reveals that the dropout rate is higher among the boys compared to girls. 

Recently, the School Education Council (Gujarat School Education Board) issued a circular to all DEOs (District Education Officer), district project coordinators, and municipal administrators, stating that dropout rates are notably higher in classes 6 to 8 and 9-10. 

The dropout rates are — 1.17% for grades 1 to 5, 2.68% for grades 1 to 8, 23.28% for grades 9-10, and 6.19% for grades 11-12.

District-wise, the highest dropout rate of 35.45% is reported in Devbhumi Dwarka. Among the total dropouts in grades 9- 10, 24.97% are boys and 21.24% are girls. 

Despite government efforts to enroll children during school admission drives, many remain untracked.

According to the tracking system, there are 2,35,127 untracked children aged 6 to 14 and 3,82,667 aged 15 to 19. 

The dropout data indicates that there are 51,764 children aged 6 to 14 and 88,972 children aged 15 to 19 who have dropped out.

The central government’s management portal shows that 1,15,219 children are not currently enrolled in school, while requests have been made for 67,969 children at the district level to be enrolled in school.

The School Education Council has instructed all DEOs and administrative officials to start the new survey from October 10, with the aim of completing the survey by November 30.
