In with the tide: Officials seize 60+ packets of charas in Kutch

Updated: Jun 20th, 2024

The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel confiscated drugs worth ₹150 crore from Sir creek of Kutch today. The seized drugs include heroin and three different types of packets containing charas.

Just a day before, a joint operation between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indian Navy’s intelligence unit seized 60 packets of charas in the Kutch region in the area between Abdasa’s Pingleshwar and the Nayra River at 6.30 am.

With this, authorities have now recovered a whopping 242 such packets of drugs in 12 days. They say they have intensified patrolling operations along Gujarat’s 1,600 km coastline, and found that an increasing amount of narcotics have been reaching Narayan Sarovar from Koteshwar, across the coastal expanse since June 8.

Those familiar with the issue say most of these seized drugs are coming in from across India’s maritime border with Pakistan.

Smugglers, both Indian and Pakistani, bringing in the narcotics on fishing boats often throw their cargo overboard as soon as they see vessels of the Coast Guard or other security agencies approaching. The drugs are sealed in waterproof packaging, which then float onto Gujarat’s shores.

The direction of the ocean current is such that these packets are now making land in Abdasa and Lakhpat in Kutch.
