Even as claims of a ‘Digital Gujarat’ continue to be highlighted, several government-run mobile applications remain outdated, raising concerns over the effectiveness of digital governance in the state.
The issue has come to light through a report by the Estimates Committee, which has pointed out gaps in the maintenance and upgradation of official applications used by various departments.
The committee has recommended that the government prioritise modernisation, especially at a time when citizens are increasingly relying on digital platforms for public services.
With the rapid expansion of internet usage, the state has been pushing digitisation across departments, offering services through websites and mobile applications to ensure ease of access. However, lapses by the Information Technology department have now come under scrutiny, as many of these applications have not been updated in line with current requirements.
Several departmental apps, particularly those related to revenue and food and civil supplies, are widely used by the public. Despite their importance, users have reported that these applications are outdated and lack necessary updates, affecting functionality and access to information.
The Administrative Reforms Commission had also earlier recommended that all government applications be upgraded and modernised to improve user experience and ensure efficient grievance redressal. The aim was to provide citizens with seamless access to services and accurate departmental information.
Despite significant expenditure on digital initiatives under the banner of “Digital Gujarat,” questions are now being raised about implementation and oversight, as outdated applications continue to hinder the delivery of efficient public services.
