Nirma University student harassed by two-wheeler taxi aggregator’s driver

A student of Nirma University in Ahmedabad went through harassment by a ride-hailing platform’s two-wheeler driver.
After she was allegedly harassed by a Rapido bike driver, she filed a complaint with the Chandkheda police on Thursday, which allegedly led to no action.
The student lives in a rented apartment near Nirma University, usually, students opt for bike rides over auto and cab to get an affordable and timely ride.
On May 15, she booked a bike ride through Rapido to reach her university. The bike rider picked her up, and the ride lasted 5-7 minutes. During the ride, the rider allegedly behaved inappropriately.
While passing from the Ambedkar Open University to the ATS Office Road, even though the road was smooth, the rider deliberately tried to make physical contact. Despite this, the student initially ignored the behaviour. Once she reached Nirma University, she paid the fare of ₹37 via Google Pay by scanning the QR code.
Initially, the student did not take the incident seriously. But right after she made the payment via Google Pay, the driver began sending her continuous messages. Even after she warned him that she would file a police complaint, the rider continued texting her with messages like:
- ‘Dear, please be good for everyone’
- ‘I said, please be a good person’
- ‘How are you? I hope you are doing well.’
- ‘Dear, please understand, I just asked you… Did not force you. Nowadays it’s common for you guys in college’
Even filing a written complaint was filed against the Rapido driver along with evidence of the messages, the Chandkheda police were allegedly inactive. She also expressed concern in her complaint that the rider may have tampered with the bike’s number plate.
The Chandkheda police had reportedly assured her that they had accepted the complaint and would take prompt action.
